So, you have been asked to join a collaborative action group, management committee, or a new team, how do you know if it is worth your time and energy?

Below are some healthy signs to look out for in any group before committing your time and skills to them

Forward-thinking – they are continually preparing to avoid pitfalls and failures; they strive to achieve continuous growth and success. Their end game is clear.

Sense of urgency   They respect and value time, always have a deadline in mind and tend to be proactive and NOT reactivate. Action is embraced before the complaints are made, or crisis arises.

They have a clear direction – they know where they are at, where they are going and why. They understand what matters and what doesn’t, and what their individual and collective roles are in the journey.

Act as a collective – where work is dependent on one person, and I is used more than we, you probably have divided team were egos rule and it is a guaranteed recipe for disaster.  Cliques form, visible and hidden battle lines are drawn, communication is low, and paranoia rises. Productivity is zero, and any kind of collective progress is impossible.

Quick to respond – resilient teams need to have the capability, resources, creativity, and healthy relationships to respond rapidly and appropriately to challenges and crises. They don’t wait for permission to act; they don’t argue about who job it is and do what they can when they can.

Curious – A group with a sense of curiosity are always asking questions, and they are always exploring how we can do this better.  Curious teams are linked to more incredible innovation, engagement, and productivity. Curious groups are willing to ask the hard questions, try new ways of working, and are not risk-averse.

Reflective groups are engaged in exploring what they do,  why, and the results. They are willing to try to do things differently. The reflective group are not paralysed by overthinking and endless debating but do not shy away from admitting mistakes and learning.

Keep promises- they do what they say they are going to do and on time.  They don’t just talk they act!  They are consistent in approach, momentum is healthy and balanced, and you can rely on them.

What healthy signs of a group do you look for before committing your time? Have you ever committed your time and regrated it?
