Succeeding at work is all about effort. You can be coached by managers or watch videos, attend training, but in the end, it’s up to you.
The most important thing to remember is that effort counts. No matter how socially awkward you are or how lacking your skills are for the task at hand, you can succeed if you try hard enough.
Success isn’t a fixed destination. It’s different for everyone, so don’t let others put you down if they have a different idea from yours. Don’t worry about being perfect; don’t overthink, get out of your head and focus on getting better at what you do every day.
You don’t have to be a genius or particularly gifted to succeed on the job. To reach your goals, you must dedicate time and effort every day.
There’s no such thing as a typical successful person. Success is different for everyone. You can get there by being patient, open-minded, productive and dedicated to what you want every day.
Positivity is everything
Try to see the glass as half full and not half empty. This is a very conscious choice thing. If you believe you’ll succeed, then you will, but if you don’t, then success will always seem out of reach. No one else can make that decision for you. You have to want success.
Positive thinking is everything when it comes to achieving success. By believing in yourself and your abilities, you can make anything possible.
Positive thinking is not about denying potential pitfalls, challenges or risks and will not protect you from making mistakes; it is about the lens you bring to situations, it is about learning from every experience, maximising opportunities, basing decisions on facts and shifting our focus to solutions.
It’s important to remember that overnight successes don’t exist; people who seem like they got it lucky worked very hard to get where they are today and no doubt had lots of challenges on route. They are successful because they make most of the journey and enjoy it.
Be proactive instead of reactive.
Successful people are proactive, not reactive. They commit to tasks, follow through on them and do their best without waiting for someone to tell them what they should be doing. Instead of being distracted and apprehensive, they take the initiative and tackle projects head-on, striving to be on top of it.
Don’t give up.
Make sure you don’t ever give up on your dreams no matter what. Don’t let someone else bring you down and make you quit, even when it’s hard to keep going. Successful people who have reached their goals never give up on themselves or their dreams, they adapt, and so should you!
Build Relationships.
Impactful relationships are based on performance and productivity, not niceties or formalities. Building relationships with your coworkers means working together to reach a common goal. Successful people spend their time doing the job, not looking for friends at work. They know whom they can trust and rely on in times of need, but they want to get their job done. So, they can go home to their families and get on with their personal life.
Don’t waste your time looking for friends; instead, focus on your character, not your reputation. As someone once said, your character is who you are; reputation is only who people think you are, be true to yourself, strengthen your integrity and give your all to be productive!
Be a self-starter
You must constantly seek ways to reflect, learn, grow and improve yourself and your work. Be constantly thinking about how you can do things better. Do not wait for someone to tell you what you need to change or improve upon; always enhance everything in the day’s work.
Don’t whine.
Whining is not the way to do anything; It’s unproductive and often can inhibit others from working around you. Please don’t waste time crying about it; figure out the problem, seek advice and support and approach it like an adult.
Try to Think three moves ahead.
Every decision you make should lead you closer to your goal, not further from it. You don’t want to make a wrong move and be back at the starting line again. Take your time to reflect, anticipate the outcomes and impacts of your decisions and actions and make decisions with your future success in mind—spot trouble before it spots you. Think about the big picture, think about other perspectives, and not just what’s right in front of you at the moment.
Give credit where it’s due.
You should never take all the credit when something goes well; make sure you acknowledge and thank those who helped you succeed! Don’t worry about petty things like who gets the credit; just let everyone know how thankful you are for their help and support. Developing an attitude of gratitude is contagiously positive, and it goes a long way in shifting negative perspectives and vibes.
Don’t forget to give yourself a break either, and celebrate your achievements; remember how far you travelled; keeping a journal is a great way to see progress.
Be patient and stay focused.
Be patient and remember to stay focused on your goals. Success will not happen overnight, so it’s important to set short-term goals and long-term ones and focus on them every day. Get excited about what you’re working towards, know the end game and don’t let any distractions or dramas get in your way!
Shit happens, so learn to accept it!
We can’t control everything as hard as we might try. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You will make them, but how you deal with them matters. Learn from your mistakes and what your missteps were, then prevent that same mistake in the future. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Successful people are not scared of failure; they understand that it’s often a necessary risk to achieve their goals. They do whatever they can to persevere and succeed even when it’s scary.
Have a thick skin
If you want to succeed on the job, you must learn how to take feedback and failure. Please don’t get hurt and over dwell on feedback, and never cry about it either. If you messed up, own up to it and learn from your mistake so that you don’t repeat it. If you disagree, fine, thank them for it, park it and move on.
Find a way to stand out.
The best way to be successful on the job is never to do what everyone else is doing. Be unique, be genuine, be you! Don’t try to imitate others or fit into any group- start being an original spirit and learn how to stand out from the crowd. Successful people are always different because they take a unique approach to everything.
Find people to help
It’s essential to find people who can help you be successful on the job. Not everyone is excellent at everything, so it’s good to have other people that complement your skills and abilities that you work with to accomplish goals. Cherish people, your blunt friends who are honest with their feedback. Surround yourself not only those who encourage you but people who continually push you to do more, to do better, and make you think.
Always share information with others, give of yourself freely; if you make yourself an expert on something, you’ll be more likely to get the recognition and success you deserve.
Don’t over-extend yourself.
Make sure you are not overextending yourself or taking on too much. If you try to take on too much by yourself, you will get burnt out, so make sure to delegate some work out to others, know your limits and use no when needed. Make most of the quiet times while there to prepare for the busy times. Value your downtime, there is no point working for work’s sake if you can’t enjoy the life it affords you.
Mimic high performers
I am not a great fan of comparative politics, there are too many shades of grey, and we are all individuals with our strengths, battles, and circumstances. However, it can help to reflect on other high performers and try doing what they do. See how they act and try to become like them; it might work for you, it might not, but seeing others as teachers rather than competitors can give you great insights. Likewise, when you see someone who has ‘screwed up, don’t judge or gossip but learn from it; see it as a warning for yourself.
Be adaptable
Trying new things can help you be more productive in the long run. Sometimes sticking with old habits and the familiar can be comforting, but if you’re adaptable and try new things, you’ll stay fresh and grow as an employee. Stay flexible to always keep up with the changing times without getting left behind.
Never forget why you were hired in the first place
This is important! It would help if you never forgot why you were employed in the first place and what your job duties are.
Do your best to be effective and efficient at all times, don’t get lazy or too comfortable. Being successful will keep you employed for a long time, so always remember your job, the organisation’s mission, your place within it and that it is a team effort.
