Smoking has always been the bane of society’s health. Yet, vaping has become the new villain sweeping the headlines in recent years. The Australian government is exploring the idea of banning vaping and requiring a prescription – but before they do, they need to acknowledge the real reasons why this policy is ludicrous.

 Harm Reduction

Studies have shown that vaping poses far lower health risks than traditional cigarette smoking. Yes, that’s right – by switching to vaping, smokers can drastically reduce the harmful effects on their lungs and heart. A complete ban does not make sense; instead, it means sending smokers back to combustible cigarettes, which we know are far worse.

Hypocrisy of Decriminalization

The hypocrisy of decriminalizing drugs and making vapes illegal cannot be ignored. There is no denying that the current Australian government has, on multiple occasions, rightly so, emphasized the importance of harm-reduction strategies. So, why then take such a backward step with vaping? Indeed it is better to support switching to a low-risk alternative than continuously risking the lives of those who want to quit smoking.

 Added Pressure on GP System

The added pressure on the GP system is staggering. The current situation with COVID-19 restrictions and healthcare staff shortages means that GPs are already stretched thin. Introducing another requirement, a prescription for vaping products, would only increase demand and put more pressure on the healthcare system. In other words, we do not need another problem to burden our already overstretched health system.

Economic Impact

Vaping stimulates the economy. It is becoming a multi-billion dollar industry – creating countless job opportunities and generating heaps of revenue. A ban would affect businesses and negatively impact vapers who rely on vaping to avoid smoking. If anything, the government should nurture this growing industry, not kill it.

Social Acceptance

Vaping is a far more socially acceptable habit. Numerous reports have been of people using vapes in public places without disrupting or disturbing those around them. This goes against the traditional smoking stereotype and suggests that vaping people can do so responsibly and respectfully.

 Increase in Black-Market Activity

Banning vaping products would only result in more black-market activity. The government would be unable to enforce a ban, and it would become increasingly difficult to control the quality of vaping products on the market.

 Focusing on Priorities

There are more important priorities to focus on. The government has bigger fish to fry than trying to implement an ill-thought policy. Creating a demon for political distraction is the oldest trick in the book. Instead of punishing vapers, why not provide incentives and access to high-quality products? Many organizations have produced evidence-based research to demonstrate the potential benefits of vaping over smoking. It is worth considering these before jumping on board the bandwagon.

Improvement of Vaping Regulations

By all means, improve regulation of underage selling, ensure products are recyclable, or limit the amount of flavouring used – but don’t outright ban vaping. It is a proven harm-reduction strategy, socially accepted and economically beneficial.

In short, a complete ban on vaping and requiring a prescription is regressive. Instead, the government should consider the benefits of harm reduction, support the booming vaping industry, and not add to the already-stretched GP system. It is essential to consider all angles before making such a significant policy. It is, therefore, time to wake up, smell the coffee, and realize that making vaping illegal is a half-witted idea that is nothing more than a great shallow headliner.
