As the CEO or manager of a not-for-profit organisation, you know that having a high-performing team is essential to achieving your mission. But what is a high-performance team, and how can you ensure that your team functions at its best? This blog post will answer those questions and give you some strategies for addressing mediocre performance.

What are the signs of a low-Performance Team?

A low-performing team can be frustrating for both employees and managers. A few key signs can help you identify a low-performing group. These include a lack of trust, fear of conflict, commitment, and individuals avoiding accountability.

A lack of attention to results often characterises a low-performing team. This can manifest in mediocre performance: high absenteeism and high staff turnover.

Additionally, individuals on a low-performing team may avoid accountability, which can lead to missed deadlines and key deliverables.

A low-performing team may lack commitment, resulting from ambiguous direction and an inability to prioritize.

If you notice any of these signs on your team, it may be time to take action to improve performance.

What are the signs of a  High-Performance Team?

A high-performance team is a group of individuals working together towards a common goal. Each team member is aware of the goals of the team and their roles in achieving those goals. The team functions like a well-oiled machine, with each member playing an integral part in the team’s success.

Several signs indicate whether a team is functioning as a high-performance team. These signs include:

  • Clear and effective communication: all team members are aware of the goals of the team and their roles in achieving those goals. There is no confusion or ambiguity about what needs to be done.
  • A positive and supportive atmosphere: team members feel comfortable communicating and being supported by their teammates. There is no finger-pointing or blame; mistakes are seen as opportunities to gain experience and grow.
  • A focus on results/outcomes: All the team will be focused on achieving its goals and not get sidetracked by distractions. Members are held accountable for their actions and continually work to improve their performance.
  • Continuous improvement: the team is always looking for ways to improve its performance. Members are open to feedback and willing to change their methods if it means achieving better results.

Tips for building winning teams

If your team is not exhibiting these signs, do not despair! There are several strategies you can use to address mediocre performance. These strategies include:

  • Improving communication: make sure that all team members are aware of the goals of the team and their individual roles in achieving those goals. Have regular meetings where everyone can share their thoughts and ideas openly. Encourage feedback from all team members and be open to changing your methods if it means improving communication within the team.
  • Creating a positive atmosphere: create an environment where teammates feel comfortable communicating and feel supported by their teammates. Encourage positive reinforcement and avoid placing blame when things go wrong. Focus on celebrating successes as a team and learn from failures together.
  • Focusing on results: hold teammates accountable for their actions and help them set achievable goals. Help them develop clear plans for how they can improve their performance. Build confidence and balance with humbleness. Stamp out egotistic behaviour and celebrate successes together. Have honest, frank conversations about areas where improvement is needed, do it quickly and move on.
  • Continuous improvement: Encourage teammates to always look for ways to improve their performance. Embrace feedback from all team members and be open to making changes if it enhances the team’s performance. Reflective practice needs to be embedded in all they do.

You can turn your team into a high-performing machine by implementing these strategies! A high-performing team is essential for any organisation, especially NGOs. By focusing on effective communication, creating a positive atmosphere, holding teammates accountable, and encouraging continuous improvement, you can ensure that your NGO runs like a well-oiled machine!
